Back pain, why put up with it?

Did you know that around 80% of Australian adults will experience lower back pain at some point in their life? No? Let’s think about this. Why do you or at least one person you know right now currently have back pain? There must be something we have in common. Could it possibly be the lifestyle we lead? The jobs we have? The habits we have created? The weight gain? Or is it our lack of activity? Why do I have back pain?

Lack of flexibility

Lack of movement and additional stress on our spine is a large factor here. But why does it cause us pain you ask? Good question – The less we move, the tighter our muscles become. When our muscles are tight, our flexibility reduces. If we allow this to continue, the muscles and joints then find movement ‘unnatural’ and yes, uncomfortable. This viscous circle of movement and pain is created where we then subconsciously avoid movement or a specific action which results in the body moving in a different way to compensate.

Avoidance of pain

Another part of this equation is that our body will always try to protect itself. When in danger this brilliant piece of programming kicks in, for instance if we touch fire we quickly pull our hand away to avoid pain. Our body will create pain if we perform an action that it thinks is not safe for us. When we suffer back pain and are unable to move freely, our body will think that our normal range of movements are dangerous for us so we feel pain. Now don’t get me wrong I don’t want everyone with back pain to start doing handstands or burpees, but with the correct guidance through this process we can re-train the body to move the correct way and reduce the pain.
